But let\u2019s be conservative and use a 15% conversion rate for this example. So the number of paid customers will be 15% of 10 (number of free trials), giving us <strong>1.5 paying customers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"js-cro-guide-subheading gtm_heading \" data-level=\"level2\" data-menu=\"Step 5: Calculate your customer acquisition cost (CAC)\" id=\"step-5-calculate-your-customer-acquisition-cost-cac\" data-menu-id=\"step-5-calculate-your-customer-acquisition-cost-cac\" style=\"text-align:left\"><strong>Step 5: Calculate your customer acquisition cost (CAC)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>The number of paying customers acquired from that investment was 1.5. So, the <strong>average customer acquisition cost (CAC) is $400 \/ 1.5 = $266. <\/strong>This may sound expensive, but to understand whether you\u2019ve made a profit we need to take into account the revenue from a customer on average.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"js-cro-guide-subheading gtm_heading \" data-level=\"level2\" data-menu=\"Step 6: Calculate the average customer lifetime value (LTV)\" id=\"step-6-calculate-the-average-customer-lifetime-value-ltv\" data-menu-id=\"step-6-calculate-the-average-customer-lifetime-value-ltv\" style=\"text-align:left\"><strong>Step 6: Calculate the average customer lifetime value (LTV)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Simply determine the average number of months a customer pays for your product before churning, and the value of the most commonly bought subscription plan. Suppose your most commonly bought plan is $49 and the average lifetime is 10 months, then the average <a href=\"https:\/\/vwo.com\/blog\/stop-measuring-number-of-pageviews-on-your-website-measure-the-right-metric-visitor-lifetime-value\/\">customerlifetime value<\/a> <strong>(LTV) is $49 x 10 = $490<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/vwo.com\/ab-testing\/#guide-download\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Download Free: A\/B Testing Guide<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"js-cro-guide-subheading gtm_heading \" data-level=\"level2\" data-menu=\"Step 7: Deduct CAC from LTV to calculate gross profit\" id=\"step-7-deduct-cac-from-ltv-to-calculate-gross-profit\" data-menu-id=\"step-7-deduct-cac-from-ltv-to-calculate-gross-profit\" style=\"text-align:left\"><strong>Step 7: Deduct CAC from LTV to calculate gross profit<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>LTV = $490<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CAC = $266<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gross profit = $224<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we calculate that from this Google Ads cost, you\u2019ll make a profit of $224. From an AdWords purely marketing perspective, this seems okay as this marketing channel is profitable. But in truth, there is more to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"js-cro-guide-subheading gtm_heading \" data-level=\"level1\" data-menu=\"Considering profitability more broadly\" id=\"considering-profitability-more-broadly\" data-menu-id=\"considering-profitability-more-broadly\" style=\"text-align:left\"><strong>Considering profitability more broadly<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>AdWords probably won\u2019t be your only marketing channel, and there are other costs beyond media spend to calculate the Return On Investment (ROI) of all your marketing efforts. But you can use these same calculations to determine the profitability of any sales or marketing spend. Also, consider other operating costs such as salaries, rent, and hardware to calculate the profitability of your company overall. If you\u2019ve got the exact numbers down, you\u2019re good.
